In a surprise announcement, the highly visible CEO of artificial intelligence technology giant OpenAI, Sam Altman, has been ousted from his position at the company, effective immediately. OpenAI’s statement said that Altman “was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.” Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO while a search gets underway for a permanent CEO. Board chairman Greg Brockman will be stepping down, but remain at OpenAI as a direct report to Murati. Altman is also co-founder of the Worldcoin global crypto project. It is unclear if Altman’s removal from OpenAI is related to WorldCoin. This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
